HACCP

HACCP stands for ‘Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points’. It is a systematic concept for ensuring product safety that was originally developed for the food industry. Today, it is also used in other industries with high hygiene requirements, such as pharmaceutical and cosmetic production. Powder mixers, synthesis reactors and vacuum mixing dryers from amixon® are also used in these industries.

The aim of HACCP is to identify potential hazards to the product at an early stage and to define appropriate control measures. Biological, chemical and physical hazards are taken into account. The focus is on identifying where risks can arise in the manufacturing process and how these can be reliably controlled. For the design and construction of process equipment, this means that cleaning, inspection and maintenance must be as simple as possible and leave no residue.

Hygienic powder mixers according to the HACCP principle must be designed in such a way that no product residues can become trapped. There must be no dead spaces where powder or residues can accumulate. Their surfaces must be smooth, easy to clean and resistant to cleaning agents and disinfectants. Reference is made here to the EHEDG guidelines.

Synthesis reactors and vacuum mixing dryers operated under HACCP conditions also follow these principles. All parts that come into contact with the product must be completely drainable and easily accessible. Seals, sensors and fittings must not impair cleanability.

The implementation of the HACCP concept usually requires close cooperation between the plant manufacturer, operator and quality assurance. Potential hazards must be identified and appropriate measures planned during the design phase. This applies to both the mechanical design and automation, for example in the monitoring of temperature, pressure or cleaning processes. Powder mixers and vacuum mixing dryers are often used in batch processes where product changes take place. In such cases, reproducible cleaning is particularly important to avoid cross-contamination.

HACCP is not a technical component, but a conceptual model that is translated into technical requirements. It contributes significantly to the manufacture of safe and hygienically flawless products. Implementation is particularly challenging but essential in equipment that processes organic powders or pharmaceutical active ingredients. amixon GmbH offers plant operators valuable assistance in this regard.
