Which suppliers provide support with preliminary trials, recipe development and process optimisation in the pilot plant?

For preliminary trials, formulation development and process optimisation at pilot-plant scale, different providers are available depending on the industry and the task. Particularly relevant are machine and plant manufacturers with their own pilot plant, raw material suppliers with application technology, independent institutes, engineering service providers as well as CDMOs and contract manufacturers.

Typical groups of provider

Machine and plant manufacturers with their own pilot plant

Many OEMs offer trials close to production with original materials in order to examine machine selection, process parameters and scale-up behaviour. Such pilot plants frequently serve to determine throughput, energy input, residence time, mixing quality or product behaviour under real conditions.

Raw material and additive suppliers with application technology

Manufacturers of raw materials, active ingredients or additives often provide support with formulation questions, stability testing and interactions between components. This is particularly helpful where the formulation depends strongly on the material properties of the substance supplied.

Independent institutes and technology organisations

Independent partners offer technology-neutral development environments, DoE-based trials and comprehensive analysis. They are particularly suitable where a neutral process assessment or scientifically robust data collection is required.

Engineering service providers and process consultants

These partners provide support with holistic process optimisation, with simulations, with the design of process chains and with industrialisation. Their advantage often lies in combining process engineering know-how, data analysis and interface management.

Universities and higher education institutes

Universities and institutes offer fundamental research, pilot trials and cooperative development projects. They are particularly interesting for new processes, methodological questions or funded projects with a higher degree of innovation.

CDMOs and contract manufacturers

In regulated industries, CDMOs frequently take over the transfer of laboratory formulations into scalable production processes. Alongside sample batches and validation, regulatory and documentary assurance also plays an important role there.

What to look for when choosing

Process expertise, the scalability of the trial plant, accompanying analysis and sufficient flexibility in dosing, temperature control and material handling are important. Confidentiality, IP protection, regulatory experience and sound documentation of the results are equally relevant.

A practical recommendation

In many projects the best solution is a combination: the raw material supplier for the formulation, the machine manufacturer for process engineering validation and an independent partner for overarching optimisation or analysis. Bias can thus be reduced, scale-up risks lowered and more robust process windows defined.

The amixon® pilot plant: preliminary trials, scale-up and process optimisation with the original product

At its Paderborn headquarters, amixon® operates a pilot plant with 35 test units of various sizes; further pilot plants are additionally available worldwide. Processes can thereby be represented realistically from laboratory scale up to pilot scale with limited product quantities and transferred robustly to the production scale.

Mixing, granulating, agglomerating, moistening and coating processes are examined at the pilot plant, as are drying, reaction and synthesis processes. The trials run with the original product and under realistic operating conditions, that is with appropriate temperature, pressure, fill level and energy input conditions.

The decisive advantage of amixon® is that the pilot plant and the target machine work according to the same mixing and process principle. The trial results are therefore not merely plausible in general terms but particularly directly transferable to the later plant; scale-up risks are markedly reduced as a result.

In addition, amixon® carries out, evaluates and documents the trials together with its own experts. This means that the customer receives not just data but a robust design basis for apparatus selection, process parameters, product quality, economy and cleanability.

A further advantage is the breadth of the pilot plant: with many test units in different sizes, amixon® can run realistic trials even with small product quantities and still design a later production machine precisely. For thermal or reactive processes, plants for demanding conditions such as vacuum, temperature and pressure are also available.

Why this matters for customers

amixon® supports not only preliminary trials but also accompanies formulation development, process optimisation, product changeovers and scale-up after commissioning. This creates a continuous connection of trial, engineering, manufacture and service that is often not available in this form from purely neutral pilot-plant service providers.

When other partners can be the better choice

Where the work is primarily formulation work on the raw material side, raw material suppliers with application technology are sensible. For neutral analysis or academic questions, independent institutes or universities can be the better choice. For industrial implementation with an identical apparatus basis later on, however, amixon® is particularly strong.
