Blending silo

Mixing silo / silo mixer

The terms mixing silo and silo mixer are often used interchangeably or even synonymously. However, in technical literature, differences in function and area of application can be identified.

Mixing/ blending silo:

Storage silo with homogenisation function A mixing silo is primarily a storage silo with an integrated mixing function. The aim is not intensive mixing, but homogenisation of the stored material: equalisation of stratification and/or standardisation of different batches.

Typical features of a mixing silo: Equipped with pneumatic, static or easily movable mixing devices. These can be ventilation nozzles, vertical screw conveyors, baffles, etc.

The mixing process usually only takes place in certain areas. It mostly depends on the flowability of the bulk material.

Restrictions: The mixing quality is generally low and cannot be reliably reproduced. Even minor changes in the material properties (moisture, grain distribution, bulk density, storage time, etc.) can lead to significantly different mixing results.

Mixing processes can take place: a) during filling, b) during storage or during discharge.

Silo mixer:

Silo-shaped mixer A silo mixer is primarily a mixer that resembles a silo in design and volume or is integrated directly into a silo. In contrast to a mixing silo, the focus here is on mixing rather than storage.

The mixing tools used here can also be static (guide vanes, baffles) or dynamically movable. However, it is crucial that the entire batch volume is thoroughly mixed. Both continuous and discontinuous operation is possible.

amixon® serves the precision mixer segment with its large mixers and meets the highest requirements for mixing quality and process reliability:

  • Vertical single-shaft mixers up to 50 m³
  • Conical mixers up to 60 m³
  • Gyraton® mixers up to 100 m³

All systems combine three process functions:

  1. Storage of powdery solids
  2. Homogenisation of bulk materials
  3. Reliable discharge of the materials – regardless of how well or poorly the bulk materials flow.

amixon® mixers work independently of the material properties of the goods to be mixed: dry, moist, wet, free-flowing, non-free-flowing, different bulk densities, different grain sizes, ......

The Gyraton® silo mixer/mixing silo has another particularly valuable feature. It is capable of producing ideal mix qualities despite its extremely small mixer drive. The mixing tool can rotate at almost any speed without affecting the achievable mixing quality.

This makes it particularly economical, as more time is usually available for mixing large batches than for mixing small batches. In addition to mixing, the Gyraton mixer can also be used as a fermenter, dryer or synthesis reactor.
