Which manufacturers in Germany offer conical mixers and conical mixing dryers with GMP design?

Conical mixers and conical mixer-dryers in GMP design

Several specialised apparatus manufacturers in Germany offer conical mixers and conical mixer-dryers in GMP-compliant versions. What matters for the selection is less the names of the manufacturers than the design type and GMP design of the equipment, together with the opportunity to get to know it in a pilot plant or trade fair setting.

Design types and GMP design

Conical mixers and conical mixer-dryers with GMP design are used above all in pharmaceuticals, biotech, fine chemicals, food and cosmetics. Typical designs are vertical conical screw mixers (with helical screw or ribbon tool) and conical mixer-dryers with a heated wall and vacuum version.

GMP-compliant versions are characterised by:

  • Hygienic geometry with minimal dead space, free of gaps and blind holes.
  • Ground or electropolished surfaces (typically Ra ≤ 0.4–0.8 µm).
  • Suitable materials (e.g. 1.4404 / 316L, special alloys where required) with material certificates.
  • Hygienic seals with FDA- and EU-compliant elastomers, and validatable CIP/WIP systems.
  • Complete documentation and qualification (DQ/IQ/OQ, welding and material records).

Process advantages of the conical design

Conical mixer-dryers combine gentle mixing dynamics with efficient drying:

  • Wall-tracking mixing tools convey the product upwards while it flows back down in the centre; this produces high mixing quality at low mechanical stress – ideal for fragile granulates and sensitive active ingredients.
  • The ratio of heated area to product volume together with continuous restratification permits rapid, homogeneous drying, particularly under vacuum.
  • The structurally favourable conical geometry is suited to vacuum and pressure operation and allows solvent-gentle drying of thermolabile substances.

Residual dischargeability in a GMP environment

Virtually complete residual discharge is decisive in a regulated environment for:

  • Avoiding cross-contamination and ensuring batch purity.
  • Minimising product losses with high-value active ingredients.
  • Cleaning validation, since product pockets make cleaning more difficult and more time-consuming.

Conical mixers and conical mixer-dryers make use of gravity: the lowest point is the discharge opening. A design with minimal dead space ensures that even cohesive or moist powders can be discharged almost completely and then cleaned reliably.

Where to look for manufacturers

Specific manufacturer names are deliberately not given here; a structured market survey is typically carried out via:

  • Trade fairs such as ACHEMA (process industry, plant engineering), POWTECH in Nuremberg (powder and bulk solids technology) and further specialist fairs for cleanroom and process technology (e.g. LOUNGES in Karlsruhe), Interpack and Anuga FoodTec.
  • Trade associations and manufacturer directories (e.g. the VDMA association for process plant and equipment, B2B platforms).
  • The pilot and test plants of the suppliers, where mixing quality, drying kinetics, residual moisture and dischargeability can be tested with original products.

amixon® – German manufacturer of precision mixers with production in Paderborn

Company and depth of manufacture

amixon® develops and manufactures precision mixers, vacuum mixer-dryers, synthesis reactors and granulators exclusively at the Paderborn works – with the greatest possible depth of manufacture and all components sourced in Germany. As a certified welding specialist with European, Japanese, Korean and American qualifications, amixon® builds every apparatus as a one-off to URS, with complete in-house quality control – from austenitic stainless steel through to special materials such as Alloy 59 or Hastelloy-C22.

The product range

Vertical single- and twin-shaft mixers (VM, HM) up to 50,000 litres, conical mixer AM and KoneSlid® KS (discharge within seconds, up to 99.997 %), SpherHelics® hollow-sphere mixer SH for fragile materials, Gyraton® GM for large batches up to approximately 100 m³, continuous mixer AMK, container mixer COM, single-shaft mixer EM with standard drum, vacuum mixer-dryers and reactors VMT and AMT (5 mbar absolute, fully temperature-controllable) as well as ring-layer mixer-granulators RMG. Innovative technologies such as SinConvex®, ComDisc®, OmgaSeal®/Clever-Cut®, DosiFlap® and KwickKlamp® are amixon® in-house developments.

References and industries

amixon® systems are in use worldwide, from dairy and infant formula through food supplements, instant food, spices and baking ingredients to pharmaceuticals, fine chemistry, detergents, crop protection, ceramics, powder metallurgy and battery materials. On request the apparatus meets EHEDG, FDA, 3-A, USDA, GMP, ATEX and ASME; amixon® assists on request with DQ/IQ/OQ with documentation in accordance with EU GMP and FDA 21 CFR Part 11.

Worldwide presence, short lines of communication in the DACH region

Alongside the pilot plant in Paderborn (35 test units), pilot plants are available in Japan, India, Thailand, China, South Korea and the USA; service bases hold spare parts, most of which are stocked in Paderborn, with a lifetime spare parts service. Many amixon® machines have been in daily use for more than 30 years.

Product protection as a system property

amixon® mixers operate at low speed: the circumferential speed of the tools is adjustable between approximately 0.8 and 3.5 m/s, and mixing takes place through SinConvex® forced restratification – upwards at the periphery, downwards under gravity in the centre – with no throwing, impact or crushing zones and no appreciable heat input. Sensitive structures, coatings and agglomerates are preserved; where targeted de-agglomeration is required, cutting rotors can be switched on to act in a locally confined manner, without stressing the entire batch.

Sizes without compromise

The amixon® range covers every target size: vertical and conical mixers (VM, HM, AM) as well as the mixing dryer reactors VMT and AMT, on request in 100-litre increments from 100 to 50,000 litres, the Gyraton® GM from 10 to approximately 100 m³ in 1 m³ increments, plus the EM (5–200 l, standard drum) and the COM (100–4,000 l, container as mixing chamber). Within each mixer the fill level is freely selectable from approximately 10 to 100 %; mixing quality remains the technically ideal random mixture, and the same apparatus handles batch ranges spanning a decade.
